5 thousand times in sea

May 11, 2009

M/f Polonia, a proud member of Unity Line's fleet, set sail for her's 5 thousand voyage. During 14 years of service on a Świnoujście-Ystad line only once she was forced to stay in port due to bad atmoshepric conditions.

Pride of polish ferry operator - Polonia - is one of the most advanced ferries on Baltic Sea. The unit was built in Norwegian Langsten shipyard and designed with specifics of the target waters in mind. With m/f Polonia, the stress was put on - besides convenience, of course -  maneuverability, allowing for safe journey in any weather. The Unity Line's ferry has four engines generating combined power of 20.000 hp. The electricity comes from generators with enough power to supply a town with 8.000 residents. All this allows Polonia to face even the worst conditions, to the point at which the ferry wasn't permitted to cruise only for a single time. The unit was able to maintain it's service even during the Emma hurricane.

M/f Polonia is able to accommodate 1.000 people and has enough room for 2.500 meters of loading line used to transport passenger cars, lorries and carriages. For 14 years of service the ferry has transported:

  • 2 841 400 passengers
  • 660 900 cars
  • 18 000 coaches
  • 625 200 lorries (if one were to put them one after another they would form a line as long as Warsaw-Mexico distance)
  • 40 789 carriages.

During hers service on Świnoujście-Ystad line Polonia covered a distance of 940 000 nautical miles (1 770 880 kilometers), which equals to 43 times the length of the equator!

During 14 years of service over 41 tons of cheese, 32 tons of cold meats and 43 tons of various fishes were used to prepare over 4 100 000 meals. Buffets and bars sold over 1 500 000 cups of tea and coffee, 420 000 various cocktails (excluding those gave away during promotions and demonstrations), 630 000 liters of beer and 460 000 wets of vodka and glasses of whiskey.

M/f Polonia was also a fitness of unusual events. One of them was a wedding ceremony of a couple of Swedish passengers conducted by the captain. It's worth noting that the couple first met on the ferry a few years earlier.
